President Joko Widodo -Ban the Pet Meat Trade.
Please help us reach 100,000 signatures by October 2016.
Insight:
Indonesia hosts a predominantly large dog and cat meat trade however, trade is not as large as seen within countries such as China, South Korea, Liberia, Nigeria and Viet Nam. 88.5% of people living within Indonesia are predominantly Muslim, which considers consuming foods such as dog or pork as ritually unclean, a practice known as (haraam). Unfortunately, while the vast majority of people living within Indonesia are Islamic there is shocking evidence that shows some Muslim citizens are indeed consuming dog meat, which is a violation of their strict faith.
Dog and cat meat is consumed mostly by "non-Muslim" minorities. This doesn't make it OK though, regardless of whether the country is mostly Islamic or not. Say No To Dog Meat is calling on President Joko Widodo, a Javanese Muslim whom is educated in environmentalism and represents wildlife causes, to ban the dog and cat meat trade.
President Joko Widodo was formally known as Joko Mulyono. President Joko Widodo's inauguration was October 20, 2014, of which he became one of the the worlds top 500 most influential Muslims of all time. Born into a basic second-class family, Javanese President Joko Widodo comes from a non-military family, of which he is educated and sympathetic to causes surrounding wildlife, animals and the environment. The presidents major task since coming to office is tackling the ongoing problems of deforestation that is responsible for killing off countless species of orangutans, pygmy elephants and medicinal flora.
Indonesian Pet Meat Trade History:
The Indonesian dog meat trade is allegedly associated with the Minahasa culture of northern Sulawesi, Maluku culture and the Bataks of northern Sumatra, where dog meat is considered a festive dish, usually reserved for occasions such as weddings and Christmas. While we - Say No To Dog Meat and our comrades Animal Defenders Indonesia, Surabaya Tanpa Dog Meat, Bali Adoption and Rehabilitation Center would like to believe this, the trade on dog and cat meat actually occurs every day of the month.
How do we know the trade in dog and cat meat is not just consumed on occasions such as weddings and Christmas? Firstly, one market we've visited countless times, known as Tomohon Traditional Market, located at Tomohon, Tomohon's Terminal area, is open daily from 6am to 4pm everyday, selling barbecued dog and cat meat carcasses.
Secondly, we know from viewing tourist advice online that this particular market is open daily.
ShweNaga states: "The reason people come here is to see the unusual (by many countries' standards) meat for sale. Dogs, cats, rats and bats are all killed, torched to burn off the fur, chopped and sold to customers. For many, it's extremely uncomfortable to see some of these animals regarded as pets back home, as a food source. However, travel broadens the mind, and I think no meat eater can make a judgement on the meat available, so long as it's not from endangered animals. At first I was shocked, but I eat beef, pork, chicken etc. so I can't comment on other cultures' choice of a food source. It certainly opened my eyes and was an interesting visit to challenge what I consider to be the norm."

Meanwhile -
Lifenadventure from from Dubai stated: "The first thing is that it is a very clean market for some I have seen n Asia. The highlight is the extreme part. The meat section. Here they have rats, chickens, wild pigs, dogs, snakes. It is certainly not for the faint hearted, there is blood literally everywhere, guts and whatever else you can think of. The dead dogs on the tables and then dogs in the cages Is hard to see. This section is certainly not for everyone."

A Singapore visitor whom traveled to the Tomohon market gave this rather shocking account of the pet meat trade that is more than just an "occasional thing" or "event related"
One Heart stated: "As I move to the side of the stall, I saw countless dogs being caged up. I see the fears in their eyes. I'm sure they know that death awaits them. Some of them weren't even full-grown dogs. I felt really sorry for them. It's hard to be caught in such situation and yet not being able to do anything to change their fate. I took a picture of this cute dog in the cage and the next moment, a woman pointed at it and the store owner used a stick attached with a rope, caught that particular dog, pull it out of the cage and clubbed it to death."
A second market that our Environmental News and Media organisation documented on killing and cooking dogs and cats is located here at - Toraja. The Toraja people are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Their population is approximately 1,100,000, of whom 450,000 live in the regency of Tana Toraja. Most of the population is Christian, and others are Muslim or have local animist beliefs known as aluk ("the way"). The Indonesian government has recognized this animist belief as Aluk To Dolo ("Way of the Ancestors").
Popular Indonesian dog-meat dishes are rica-rica, also called rintek wuuk or "RW", rica-rica waung, guk-guk, and "B1". On Java, there are several dishes made from dog meat, such as sengsu (tongseng asu), sate jamu, and kambing balap.
Dog consumption in Indonesia gained attention in United States where dog is a taboo food, during the 2012 Presidential election when incumbent Barack Obama was pointed by his opponent to have eaten dog meat served by his Indonesian stepfather Lolo Soetoro, during his stay in the country. However even before President Obama's election, the dog meat trade in Indonesia was well documented on and known to hundreds if not thousands.
