Preserve the Route G Loop Bus route and schedule in Beacon, NY

The Issue

I am a resident of Beacon, NY. Like many others in our community, I rely on the Route G Loop bus that travels along Route 9D. This bus service is not just a means of transportation for us; it is a lifeline that connects us to our jobs, to local businesses on Main Street, and allows us to maintain our independence.

Many of my neighbors use this service to commute to work every day. As people have started hybrid work schedules, they take the bus once, twice, or three times a week to get to the train. Having these reliable services means their families don't have to purchase a second car that sits at the train station all day. The current bus route encourages people to walk or bike, which promotes our city's environmental goals.

Because the Loop bus is free, people on fixed incomes who may not have another means of transportation consider it an essential resource. As the route works currently, they can get from their homes to the grocery store without transferring or paying a fare. Additionally, access to this bus means our senior citizens can age at home comfortably without worrying about extra car trips or finding a parking space on Main Street.

However, some proposed changes - turning this service into a Main Street shuttle with limited hours - threaten this vital service in our community. We believe these changes will negatively impact many residents who depend on this bus route daily. These service cuts eliminate all public transportation options for everyone living south of Main Street.

The distance from the train station to Mt Beacon trailhead is 1.8 miles, with over 200 feet of elevation gain. If the plan for a Main St shuttle goes through, eliminating the service to the trailhead, the nearest stop for residents in that part of town is .7 miles—not practical if one has luggage or heavy bags. On a rainy, hot, or smoky day, that will be too much distance and elevation for most riders.

We urge you to reconsider these proposed changes and consider how they would affect all those who rely heavily on the Route G Loop bus. We know that improvements to the service, such as reliable schedules, improved bus stops, and working buses, would improve ridership. The new proposal with Sunday service is precisely what we need! Let's improve - not eliminate - the bus line and maintain this crucial service as it is now - accessible and free for those who need it most.
