Preserve the Name "Denali" for Our Historic Mountain

The Issue

President Trump has recently proposed to change the name of our treasured national monument, Denali, back to its colonial-era name, "Mount McKinley". This ambitious endeavor disregards the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous Koyukon Athabaskan people, who have traditionally called the mountain Denali, meaning "the High One". Reverting to "Mount McKinley" erodes the progress made in 2015 to honor the indigenous peoples of America and their cultural legacy. This endeavor exacerbates societal attempts to erase the indigenous footprint from American history. Though first recognized by the U.S. Government as "Mount McKinley" in 1917, the natural monument has been known as Denali by the Native Alaskans for centuries (National Geographic, 2015). With over 20,000 feet of proud stature reaching towards the sky, Denali is a symbol of America's natural grandeur and historic indigenous cultural richness. Let's ensure future generations know its true origin and uncensored history. Urge our leaders to maintain the name "Denali" for this majestic landmark and provide educational resources about its true legacy. Sign this petition to show your support for preserving America's native history and for respecting the wishes of Alaskans and the indigenous community in preserving the name "Denali". (Note: The purpose of this petition is not to deface President Trump, or any individual for that matter. The purpose is to maintain the name “Denali” for our glorious mountain. We must always remember to treat others with respect and dignity, even if we don’t agree with there policies or opinions. We make and sign petitions like this to ultimately make the world a better place, not to point out the flaws in any individuals. Please always be respectful and kind when sharing opinions and ideas.)
