Preserve the Former Baker Hospital Site as a Park

Preserve the Former Baker Hospital Site as a Park
The Issue
Keep the Park a Park!
The former Baker Hospital Site by the Ashley River was purchased with the intention of making the site a park that communities in North Charleston and beyond can utilize. Now Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission has signed an agreement that would see a significant portion of the site become a boat manufacturing plant. Local residents express concerns about the adverse effects of industrial activities on the area, emphasizing the importance of preserving existing parks as vital green spaces for the community.
The City of North Charleston has zoning in place that will keep industrial uses off of the park property. Nevertheless, the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission has submitted an application for a zoning change, proposing a significant portion of the park to be zoned for heavy industrial use.
We signers of this petition are asking for:
o The City of North Charleston to keep its current zoning which prevents a portion of this park space from becoming industrial property.
o The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission to end its agreement with Seafox Boats and work with other local government partners that will enable this ENTIRE site to remain a park space or other usage that is supported by the community.
o The City of North Charleston, Charleston County, and others need to appropriately set aside funding to keep this full park property a park!
We urge leaders involved with this site to take all necessary measures to KEEP THE PARK A PARK- preserving the park's use for green space and recreational activity and preventing any portion of it from being designated for industrial purposes.
For those who want to take further action. North Charleston’s City Council will consider the rezoning request that would allow the Seafox facility to be constructed. This meeting will be on April 18 at 5pm at North Charleston City Hall the meeting is open to the public and we need to fill the room with people in opposition to the current plan. If you would like to speak please get there early to sign up for a place in line. Thank you!
