The Issue

The Child Care Learning Academy in Rochester, a beacon for early childhood education and play, stands threatened as the vibrant playground that serves as a vital developmental space for our children faces potential removal. Situated at 11 Calvin Road, the playground has been a nurturing environment where countless children have laughed, learned, and grown.

The City of Rochester Real Estate Office, which owns the land adjoining the academy, is considering removing the playground due to insurance-related concerns. It is crucial to understand the importance of maintaining this space for both the children and the community at large.

Playgrounds are more than just spaces for fun—they are essential to a child's growth. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is crucial for cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being in children and youth. Approximately 83% of parents report that play enhances their child's ability to learn new information and develop new skills. In such a setting, the Child Care Learning Academy continually provides a safe and stimulating environment.

To prevent the closure of this vital resource, we propose that the City works collaboratively with Melanie Rivera, the academy's owner, to establish an insurance agreement or alternative arrangement. Such a partnership would not only secure the playground's future but would highlight the City's commitment to fostering community spaces that prioritize child development.

This isn't just about preserving a playground; it's about ensuring the continued holistic development of our community's children. Let's not forget that many families depend on this academy and its playground as a central part of their daily lives.

We urge the City of Rochester to consider the long-term benefits for our community's children and families. We need a solution that respects both municipal guidelines and the invaluable role this playground plays in our children's development.

Please join us in appealing to the City of Rochester Real Estate Office and relevant city officials to find an amicable resolution that allows our cherished playground to remain a cornerstone of learning and play.
