5 PM Tonight in Brevard County Commission Chambers in Viera

We are just six hours away from the start of the Brevard County Commission formal zoning hearing in Viera. It is at this meeting that our five county commissioners will hear the application by the developer to rezone 1800 Turtle Mound Rd.

They are requesting to rezone 14.37 acres from RR-1 (one home site per acre) to RU-1-11. They have said publicly at the zoning hearing that they want 14 “units” — (which we have identified as one unit per gross acre).

Since much of the property is in a FEMA Class “A” Flood Zone, we believe their plan would likely compress 14 “units” on the roughly 3.5 acres of buildable land to the north side—directly abutting the five estate homes on Carolwood and Turtle Mound.

In addition, that RU-1-11 zoning category could permit up to 57 homes if any Binding Development Plan (BDP) that they proposed was nullified for any reason. The P&Z advisory board is recommending a denial. The City of Melbourne is opposed due to lack of capacity. The homes nearest would experience the greatest impact from stormwater runoff.

Join us tonight to protect the character of our community—Lake Washington. The application is number 7 on the agenda. Let’s fill the room.

Thank you for your support since we launched our first petition in June. We have gathered nearly 5,500 signatures both on paper and online to fight both applications.
