Preserve the Century-Old Michigan Central Railroad Coaling Tower

The Issue

Like many of you, I share a deep connection to the century-old coaling tower built by the Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) in Michigan City, Indiana. Our goal, as railfans, former MCR employees, residents of Michigan City, and general admirers of historical structures, is to preserve this significant piece of the railroad history. The announcement that this coaling tower will be torn down next year threatens not only the legacy it holds, but also disrupts Amtrak services for up to two weeks (source: Trains.com). We acknowledge the potential operational challenges of keeping this edifice trackside; however, we firmly believe in the value of preserving its spirit in some tangible way. If razed without any thought of conservation, it would mean the obliteration of our shared history and the lessons it offers for future generations. Therefore, we call on the appropriate authorities - railroad companies, city officials, historic preservation societies - to reconsider the demolition plans and find a solution to ensure this celebrated coaling tower continues to stand tall. By signing this petition, you are standing up for our rich past and paving the way for it to enlighten our future. Please, sign and share.
