Preserve the Benson Reserve!

Preserve the Benson Reserve!
The Issue
We believe in the importance of preserving and restoring Montauk’s natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations. That’s why we’re calling on you to join us in supporting the Benson Reserve Habitat Restoration Project in Montauk. This stunning natural maritime ecosystem has been marred by the proliferation of invasive plant species, threatening the biodiversity and scenic beauty that Montauk residents and visitors love.
In partnership with the Town of East Hampton and landscape ecologist Rusty Schmidt from Nelson, Pope & Voorhis, Concerned Citizens of Montauk (CCOM) has outlined a comprehensive management plan to restore the public 40-acre Benson Reserve. The Benson Reserve Habitat Restoration Project is a 10-year commitment to remove the invasive species and restore the native flora and fauna while stabilizing the bluffs, enhancing water quality, and restoring the beautiful historic ocean views along the Old Montauk scenic highway. The plan uses well established invasive species management techniques such as strict erosion control protocols and the temporary and selective use of goats. By signing this petition, you’re voicing your support for this vital restoration effort. You’re standing up for:
- ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION: This project will restore and protect native plants, animal, and insect species.
- ENHANCED RESILIENCY: It will stabilize the bluffs and improve water quality.
- THE RESTORATION OF THE HISTORIC VIEWSHED: It will restore the beautiful historic ocean views along the Old Montauk scenic highway.
Together, we can ensure that the Benson Reserve continues to be a place where residents and visitors can hike, enjoy the beach, and connect with nature for generations to come. Your signature will send a powerful message of support for this project to our local leaders and organizations. Sign this petition, share it with friends and neighbors, and let’s make a difference for Montauk.
