Preserve Ontario's School Board Trustees
The Issue
Growing up with children in the Ontario school system has given me firsthand experience with the importance of having locally elected school board trustees. As a parent, I have relied on these advocates to not only assist with individual issues but also to maintain a link between the community and the school boards. Without trustees, this essential advocacy and governance would be lost, leaving the boards less accountable and less connected to the communities they serve. Having worked alongside many trustees and candidates, I have seen their dedication to making school boards more efficient and better for the children.
Recent reports suggest that the Ontario government is considering cutting trustees from school boards. According to a CBC article, such a move would undermine the democratic process and weaken the representation and oversight that trustees provide. Trustees play a vital role in holding school boards accountable, safeguarding educational standards, and ensuring that the voices of students, parents, and educators are heard in decision-making processes. Reducing their numbers or diminishing their roles could result in school boards operating without the crucial checks and balances that trustees provide.
Ontario’s education system requires active involvement from trusted representatives who are elected by and accountable to their communities. School board trustees are integral for representing the diverse needs of our population, guiding policymaking with local insight, and advocating for our children’s best interests. Removing or reducing their roles threatens the very foundation of community-driven governance in education.
We must act now to ensure that the Ontario government upholds the role of school board trustees. Maintaining these positions is not only about preserving jobs but about safeguarding the democratic process and the involvement of community voices in educational governance.
Please join me in calling on the Ontario government to keep our elected school board trustees in place. By signing this petition, you are supporting a stronger, more accountable, and community-focused educational system in Ontario. Let us safeguard our children's education and future by maintaining these vital roles for trustees in our school boards.
