Preserve NYC Historic Horse-Drawn Carriages: Protect a Timeless Tradition! 🐴🗽️
The Issue
Help us to preserve the beautiful timeless tradition of NYC Historic Horse-Drawn Carriages and the working relationship between horses and people!
For over a century, horse-drawn carriages have been an integral part of Central Park's historical mosaic, bringing joy to millions of visitors. Just imagine the countless proposals, family outings, and romantic strolls that have been made unforgettable by the gentle clip-clop of horses' hooves on park pavement.
We're a family of dedicated carriage drivers, including men and women from first- and second-generation immigrant and American-born families, who have been driving horses in Central Park for generations, with some of us having over 40 years of experience. Our families have been in this business for decades, and we take pride in continuing the tradition. Our horses are more than just animals – they're like family to us, and we ensure they receive the best care possible. A ban on horse-drawn carriages would not only jeopardize our livelihood but also the lives of our horses and the countless families who depend on this tradition.
The Truth About Central Park's Carriage Horses:
• Regulated and Protected: Overseen by 5 city agencies, including the Department of Health & NYPD Mounted Unit.
• Well-Cared For: 5 weeks of vacation time to farms with pastures for days off to run and frolic.
• Safe Working Conditions: Limited to 9 hours/day, no work in extreme heat or cold.
• Comfortable Stalls: Large enough for horses to turn around and lie down comfortably.
• Regular Veterinary Care: Examined by equine veterinarians at least 2 times/year.
The Reality:
• Loved & Healthy: Carriage horses live long, healthy lives.
• Low Stress: Cortisol stress hormone study reveals horses aren't stressed by the city.
• Unique Bond: Many carriage drivers are 1st & 2nd generation immigrants with a deep connection to these magnificent animals.
The Consequences of a Ban:
• Loss of Livelihood: Drivers' families depend on this income.
• Breed Preservation: A nationwide ban would threaten the very existence of the carriage horse breed itself.
