The Issue

Lake of the Isles Skating rink has provided winter recreation, community, and connection for my family for 60 years. With family, friends, out of town guests, and strangers, skating provides a unique, quintessential Minnesota experience. Located in the city's largest park, Lake of the Isles rink is a long-treasured symbol of tradition and unity, providing free outdoor winter recreation to everyone from toddlers to seniors. It's beautiful venue draws people in a unique way, emblematic of why we chose to make Minneapolis our home.

Research shows the importance of such community resources. The American Journal of Public Health shares, for instance, a study demonstrating that recreational facilities like the Lake of the Isles Skating Rink play a significant role in maintaining social connections and physical health (AJPH, 2017).

Though we are experiencing climate change, cold weather has allowed for skating from December thru February, 2025.  However, park board staff/leaders are recommending permanent closure for the rink. ,

With the survival of the Lake of the Isles Skating Rink under threat, please sign this petition requesting staff find alternative solutions to ensure continuation of the rink.  We insist they assess the full economic value of continued operation including the value the rink brings to the neighborhoods, surrounding businesses, and the city.

Sign this petition and join us in urging officials to safeguard the legacy of the Lake of the Isles Skating Rink.
