Preserve Kenwood

The Issue

Preserve Kenwood is organizing to support the preservation of the historic core of the Kenwood estate – some 50 acres – and its associated historic structures, while working to realize the highest and best use for three large developable parcels on the north, west, and southeast edges of the property – some 25 acres.

While the main 19th century building is lost, what remains is a treasure of national significance. We have a brief opportunity to ensure that the site and its historic buildings are preserved for the benefit of future generations.

We invite you to join the effort to identify institutional and governmental partners; map the site; and explore the creation of a historic landscape report and redevelopment master plan.

NOTE: We are only asking for your signature, not donations. The request for funds after signing benefits Change.org, not Preserve Kenwood.

The effort to Preserve Kenwood will not only safeguard the early historic buildings on the property, 50 acres of green space will also:

  • create a publicly accessible natural area with wooded trails, mature trees, orchards, and open meadows;
  • preserve habitat for birds, wildlife, and myriad pollinators;
  • provide a green and restorative resource for residents of the South End; Albany County, and the entire Hudson Valley; and
  • link to existing recreation areas including the Albany County Rail Trail.

Please sign our petition and share it with your friends, neighbors, and fellow alumni. We hope that people who live in or near Albany, who are or were affiliated with Doane Stuart or the Kenwood Academy, or who simply support a greener future for Albany will support our work to Preserve Kenwood.
