Preserve Insurance Coverage for GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications for KMETRO Employees

The Issue

I am a KMETRO bus driver and like many of my colleagues, I rely on the existing insurance coverage for GLP-1 weight loss medications provided to city and KMETRO employees . These medications are not a luxury, they are necessary for those of us battling conditions such as diabetes and obesity, to lead a healthy life. There are abundant studies that clearly show the benefits of GLP-1 in weight management, alongside its impact on controlling blood sugar levels.

With the rising rate of obesity in the country – a staggering 42.4% of the population in 2017-2018 according to the CDC – it is crucial that measures to manage this health crisis are not rolled back. Considering that city employees, including myself and my fellow KMETRO workers, serve our community day in and day out, it is essential that our health is prioritized.

The City of Kalamazoo will negotiate a new coverage contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan this year. Maintaining the current insurance coverage levels for GLP-1 medications for us is not only an act of respect and gratuity for the services we offer to Kalamazoo and surrounding communities but also a necessity for keeping the workforce healthy and productive. Drivers spend 8, 12, and sometimes 16 hours a day driving, without any specified meal break. Often we barely have time to squeeze in bathroom visits. These factors contribute to conditions such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and more. It's time to raise our voices against any changes in the coverage of these medications. Don't let our health be compromised. Please, sign this petition to keep insurance coverage intact for GLP-1 weight loss medications for Kalamazoo City employees and CCTA KMETRO employees.
