Preserve environment. Protect wildlife. Prosper together.
The Issue
As of Jul 1, 2026, we have learned of a proposal to lease private property on Grote Road again, for the construction of a telecommunications tower with Homeland Towers, directly across from the Chester Creek Preserve.
Chester Eco Alliance supports the need for reliable wireless communications and dependable emergency connectivity. However, we believe these goals can and should be achieved without sacrificing Chester's unique natural resources, historic character, and environmental heritage.
According to DEEP, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection , the Chester Creek area contains sensitive natural resources, including endangered and globally vulnerable species. The preserve also provides habitat for more than fifteen species of birds, includes an osprey nesting area, and lies adjacent to the Connecticut River and protected inland wetlands. This ecosystem is one of Chester's most valuable environmental assets and deserves careful protection.
The proposed location is within an established residential neighborhood with numerous nearby homes. Residents are concerned about the visual impact of a structure approximately 130 feet (roughly the height of a 12-story building), potential impacts on property values and neighborhood character, and the safety implications of placing such infrastructure in close proximity to homes and environmentally sensitive land.
We also believe it is important to ensure that local emergency services are fully prepared to respond to any incident involving telecommunications equipment, including structural emergencies, toxic cleanup or fires. As a volunteer fire department, Chester's emergency responders should have the resources, training, and equipment necessary to address any risks associated with a facility of this size.
We are asking our neighbors and all who value Chester's natural beauty to join us in requesting that environmentally responsible alternatives be fully evaluated before this location is approved.
Please sign our petition to:
Preserve Chester's wetlands, forests, and scenic landscape.
Protect Chester Creek Preserve and its wildlife habitat.
Protect the character of our residential neighborhoods.
Encourage the selection of a less environmentally sensitive location for improved wireless service.
Ensure that any telecommunications project is planned with public safety, environmental stewardship, and community input as top priorities.
Together, we can support better cellular service while preserving the natural and historic character that makes Chester such a special place.
