8579 has been listed as "to be scrapped" along with most of the remaining NREX SD40M-2s

On August 12, 2026, NREX started cleaning out their Paducah facility and moved most of their units away for scrap. One of these is 8579. This is the line of NREX units to be scrapped:

• SD40M-2's 2684 & 2724
• SD40-2's 9402 & 5661
• SD40M-2 2755
• SD40-2's 5542 & 9926
• SD40-2B 8965
• SD40M-2's 8674, 8579 & 2758

The consist has went to CSX's Atkinson Yard in Madisonville, Kentucky, and eventually to their deaths. Support the petition to pull the #8579 out of the scrap line, along with another SD40M-2, and send it to preservation.
