The issue

Growing up in Melbourne, riding the iconic Alstom and EDI Comeng trains has been an integral part of my life. These trains, with their unique design and incredible engineering, have served our city and its residents reliably for decades. With the release of the newer HCMT and X'Trapolis 2.0 fleet, these historical sets are rapidly being phased out and decommissioned. This petition stems from a deep urge to save a piece of Melbourne's rich rail history for future generations.

The Alstom and EDI Comeng trains are not just another type of train; they are symbols of our heritage, reflecting a specific era of engineering that connected communities and fostered public transportation growth across Victoria. The distinct experience of traveling on these trains, from the rhythmic clattering to the familiar hum as they pull into the train station, is something worth preserving. If we allow all these trains to be scrapped without saving even any, we are discarding a vital chapter of our city's narrative.

Many cities worldwide have successfully preserved transport icons, enabling future generations to experience a living history. For instance, Japan's Tobu 8000 Series Train, set 8111F, was preserved in operational working condition, rather than being sent to the scrapyard. Likewise, Melbourne must recognize the cultural and historical value of the Comeng sets and commit to preserving at least one train from the Alstom and EDI series.

These preserved trains could serve as functional historical displays, participating in special services or rail heritage events. This would not only honour our past but also educationally benefit school groups and history enthusiasts by providing tangible insights into the evolution of urban transportation systems. Moreover, by maintaining a handful operational sets, we can draw tourist interest and foster community pride, highlighting Melbourne’s commitment to celebrating its history while progressing towards its future.

I urge the responsible authorities, including the Victorian government, Transport Victoria, and Metro Trains Melbourne, to take immediate action. Allocate funds and resources necessary to preserve at least one 3-car Alstom Comeng set and one 3-car EDI Comeng set in fully operational condition. Let us capture the imagination of our citizens and tourists and celebrate our engineering triumphs rather than let them fade into obscurity.

Join me in standing for Melbourne's historical legacy. I know we can't keep all of them, but let's try to keep as many as we can. Sign this petition to keep the memory rolling on Melbourne's tracks, ensuring that a tangible piece of our rich railway history remains for generations to come.
