We’ve always known that stopping what Margaret Atwood calls Midhurst’s “life-wrecking event” – the unnecessary and jarring mega-development - is doable. We’ve worked tirelessly and strategically for years to derail it. A watershed moment in the last municipal election was our persuading the voters to elect a Springwater Council which puts the people’s interests first and believes in smart growth, not cancerous sprawl. Guess what? Springwater Council AND Simcoe County just did something RIGHT: they said NO to more growth in Midhurst beyond what’s CONDITIONALLY approved. Phase 2 of this disastrous plan, which would have chewed up another 456 hectares of prime farmland for 5000+ cookie-cutter homes, is DEAD!! What a WIN for the public interest, which has been largely ignored until now! Of course, there’s no way the developers will walk away from hundreds of millions of profit without a fight. Despite a slim chance of winning, they will take this to the OMB and on to court, if necessary. You can count on us to support our politicians as the only direct voice for the little guy. Earlier this spring, we told you why we need top-notch scientific and legal expertise to kill the Midhurst mega-development before it sees the light of day. Thanks to your donations, we now have those experts. Their work is well underway and bearing fruit! Unfortunately, we’ve found out the developers’ environmental studies will be released much sooner than we were told. Later this month, in fact. This means our team of experts have to be ready to comment and challenge later this summer. Because, without objective and comprehensive data on what’s actually BEST for our local environment and community, government decision-makers will be stuck with an incomplete and skewed picture paid for by self-interested developers. In fact, those decision-makers will be led to believe 10,000 new homes will have NO adverse effects! Can you believe such a claim?? So much for quality of life and a sustainable future in the heart of Ontario where agriculture and tourism are the life-blood of the economy. Just to line the pockets of greedy developers who neither live here nor care! Please help us prevent this looming tragedy. As Ms. Atwood said, we have to keep pushing the rock up the hill to save Midhurst and its surrounding area of fertile farmland, pure cold-water streams and the all-important Minesing Wetlands.
