Farmers for Climate Action
Apr 2, 2018
Groundwater and farmland is at stake all over Australia from Senator Matt Canavan's latest push to force more mines on rural communities with his Government-funded ‘resources taskforce’. Will you help me set up an alternative taskforce to develop a better vision for our regional communities? I'm happy we're making some progress tackling the Adani mine here in Central Queensland - although we still have a long way to go. But I'm worried that other graziers and farmers are facing threats from coal and gas mining all over our great country. Last week Adani's political cheerleader Matt Canavan announced a taskforce to promote mining in rural areas and identify “reforms that will help secure the resources sector's future”. I'm working with Farmers for Climate Action on a great idea. We could come together and crowd-fund an 'alternative taskforce' to counter Matt Canavan's one. All we need to make it happen is the funding to bring on a coordinator, pay for travel to the meetings, and send copies of our report to journalists and politicians. What do you think? If you agree it's a good idea, could you consider chipping in $5 to help set it up? Farmers for Climate Action has already got access to the best experts in rural and regional development - farmers and community leaders from across rural and regional Australia. Matt Canavan’s taskforce will issue recommendations to the Government in August. We’ll issue our own alternate report before then, outlining opportunities for job-creating opportunities in regional areas that don't risk our water, land and climate. Thank you so much for your support so far. I hope you can join me in this important next step. Best wishes, Angus Emmott Longreach Grazier & Farmers for Climate Action Board Director P.S. Our communities and our agricultural regions are more than just holes in the ground. Our alternative taskforce will help change the conversation in the media and Parliament, shifting the focus on jobs for rural communities into a more productive discussion than “what can we dig up and burn next”.
