The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) has affirmed the SOGICE Survivor Statement.

The SOGICE Survivor Statement, written by Australian survivors of conversion practices, calls on authorities in Australia to work towards ending the LGBTQ+ conversion movement through survivor-led recommendations.

The affirmation was announced in a statement from AMSA released today to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and support for the statement was unanimously voted by Australian medical student societies at the AMSA National Council.

AMSA Queer National Coordinator, Anthony Copeland, said “The unanimous agreement to affirm the SOGICE Survivor Statement by AMSA shows our strong commitment as future medical professionals to prioritise harm prevention across our communities. We will continue to advocate with survivors of these practices and call for more action by the government.”

AMSA now joins a long list of groups who have affirmed the SOGICE Survivor Statement including Amnesty International Australia, ThorneHarbour Health, ACON and PFLAG.

If you would like to affirm the statement as an individual, please go to www.SOGICEsurvivors.com.au
