Hi supporters!
I'm writing this update with lots of happiness. The ACT government has firmly committed to legislate against conversion practices by the end of 2020.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr made the announcement yesterday following the release of the Capital of Equality Action Plan.
At 19 I moved to Canberra to take part in 'Living Waters', an 'ex-gay' ministry which is now defunct. The announcement has made me giddy with happiness, particularly since a multi-pronged approach has been alluded to, in which several strategies alongside legislation will be adopted to tackle not only the practices but the ideology that underpins them.
The ACT LGBTIQ+ Ministerial Advisory Council will be holding a 'Think Tank' called 'Combatting LGBTQ+ Conversion Practices' on the 19th November 2019. Speakers include myself, ACT Discrimination Commissioner Karen Toohey and Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury.
If you are interested in hearing about the effect conversion practices have on people and how the ACT proposes to address them, I encourage you to come along. You can book here (limited tickets).
I hope to meet some of you there!
