La condition animale sur l'île de Saint-Martin est extrêmement alarmante. En grand nombre, chiens et chats errent dans les rues, sur les plages et sur les chantiers. Mais quelle en est la cause ?

Eh bien, beaucoup sont abandonnés par leurs propriétaires ou bien encore réussissent à fuir leur foyer maltraitant. Livrés à eux-mêmes, ils tentent de survivre, de se regrouper en meute et ainsi se reproduisent.

Sur la "Friendly Island", la cruauté envers les animaux est monnaie courante, allant des jets de pierres par des enfants ou adultes à des actes de maltraitance extrême (coups de machette, privation d'eau et de nourriture, chiens en cage, chiots ou chatons jetés vivants dans des poubelles...). Nombreux sont ceux attachés au bout d'une courte corde, souvent en plein soleil pour le restant de leur vie. Pire encore, des vagues d’empoisonnement sont régulièrement signalées (des aliments imbibés de strychnine, substance interdite en France, sont jetés sur la voie publique, causant d’atroces souffrances aux animaux, entraînant leur mort).

Depuis l’ouragan Irma en 2017, l’unique refuge de l’île a été détruit et n’a jamais été reconstruit. Dès lors, une communauté active de bénévoles œuvre pour trouver des familles d'accueil et/ou adoptives aux animaux errants. Des associations locales font également un travail remarquable comme notamment les collectes de nourriture, la participation aux frais de stérilisation ou encore le transfert des animaux par voie aérienne. Les cliniques vétérinaires apportent un soutien constant à l'ensemble de ces actions. Mais face au grand nombre d'animaux à sauver, les efforts des uns et des autres ne suffisent plus.

SANS REFUGE le problème va continuer de s'accroître.

Malheureusement, voilà des années que l'on nous prévoit sa reconstruction, mais le projet est sans cesse reconduit. La population a été informée qu'en 2025, à quatre reprises, sur une période de deux semaines, la fourrière de Guadeloupe viendrait capturer les chiens en divagation et euthanasier tous ceux non réclamés par d'éventuels propriétaires ou adoptants. Ceci n'est pas une solution acceptable.

Il est plus que temps d'agir.

Signons ensemble cette pétition :

• Pour que les autorités compétentes prennent enfin en considération ce problème et créent RAPIDEMENT le refuge de SAINT-MARTIN, afin d'offrir une seconde chance à tous nos fidèles à 4 pattes !
• Pour que la loi en vigueur soit appliquée par tous les citoyens de l'île et que justice soit rendue lorsque des actes de maltraitances sont constatés !

Mesdames, Messieurs, cette pétition a pour seul objectif : le bien-être des animaux. Dans cette quête de changement, veillons à ce que nos échanges et nos actions soient toujours respectueux et bienveillants car s'il est bien connu que "le mal attire le mal", c'est en cultivant le bien que de bonnes choses se réaliseront !

FOR AN ANIMAL SHELTER AND ADOPTION CENTER ON THE ISLAND OF ST-MARTIN AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF ANIMAL CONDITIONS

The Problem

The animal situation on the island of Saint Martin is extremely alarming. Large numbers of dogs and cats roam the streets, beaches, and construction sites. But what's the cause?

Well, many are abandoned by their owners or manage to escape their abusive homes. Left to their own devices, they try to survive, form packs, and thus reproduce.

On the "Friendly Island," animal cruelty is commonplace, ranging from stone-throwing by children and adults to extreme abuse (machete blows, deprivation of food and water, caged dogs, puppies and kittens thrown alive into garbage bin, etc.). Many are tied to the end of a short rope, often in full sun for the rest of their lives. Worse still, waves of poisoning are regularly reported (food soaked in strychnine, a substance banned in France, is thrown onto public roads, causing excruciating suffering to the animals, leading to their death).

Since Hurricane Irma in 2017, the island's only shelter was destroyed and never rebuilt. Since then, an active community of volunteers has been working to find foster and/or adoptive families for stray animals. Local organizations are also doing remarkable work, including food drives, contributing to sterilization costs, and even airlifting animals. Veterinary clinics provide ongoing support for all of these efforts. But with so many animals in need of rescue, the efforts of all are no longer enough.

WITHOUT SHELTER AND STÉRILISATION PROGRAM, the problem will continue to grow.

Unfortunately, its reconstruction of the Shelter has been planned for years, but the project is constantly being renewed. The population has been informed that in 2025, four times over a two-week period, the Guadeloupe pound will come to capture stray dogs and euthanize all those not claimed by potential owners or adopters. This is not an acceptable solution.

It is high time to act.

So that the current law is enforced by all citizens of the island and that justice is served when acts of abuse are observed!
