Hello,
As an update, the Land Division was approved today by the Township, which was the last hurdle the Dollar General needed to move forward. Thank you to everyone who showed up today and made it clear that we are NOT happy with this outcome, nor the inaction and lack of creativity in the last two years of Township officials to find a solution to prevent us from being in this position.
Moving forward, we need to focus on two things.
1. There are still environmental concerns at the site and we all need to ask Steve (kitlers@michigan.gov) at EGLE to evaluate and test a full scan on drinking water and groundwater sampling and request a Geo probe testing for leachate and metals where the industrial fabrication, sandblasting and cleaning takes place, as well as where the former gas station tanks were located.
2. We ALL need to be taking a hard look at the proposed master plan (see Land Use starting on page 50). The commercial zoning structure that is being proposed would allow more and more "use by right" development, which sets aside our desires to maintain a rural community, creating the potential for more chain stores to open regardless of our continued feedback that it's not what we want.
Please take time today to preserve Long Lake for tomorrow. Thank you for your support and I am thankful we are neighbors.
