Port St. Lucie Deserves Better: Prioritize Our Infrastructure Before More Development
The Issue
PORT ST. LUCIE DESERVES BETTER
A Call to Prioritize Our Existing Infrastructure and Protect Our Future
Every rainy season in Port St. Lucie brings a sense of dread. For many residents, heavy rainfall means worrying about flooded streets, rising water, and whether their homes and businesses will be affected.
The flooding on November 2nd, 2026, was a wake-up call. Cars submerged underwater, homes flooded, roads left impassable, and businesses forced to temporarily close. What happened yesterday was a disaster, and it raises some serious questions about the condition of our city’s infrastructure.
Port St. Lucie has grown tremendously over the years, but have we done enough to make sure the infrastructure supporting that growth can actually handle it?
We cannot continue focusing on building more of our city while overlooking the problems affecting the city we already have.
THIS IS BIGGER THAN INCONVENIENCE. THIS IS ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY, PROTECTING OUR PROPERTY, AND MAKING SURE OUR COMMUNITY IS PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
As our population grows and more development takes place, our roads, drainage systems, and stormwater infrastructure face increasing demands.
When heavy rainfall overwhelms these systems, the consequences reach every part of our community.
- Flooded roads can prevent residents from getting to work.
- Businesses can be forced to temporarily close.
- Emergency services can experience delays.
- Standing water can create health concerns, including increased mosquito breeding.
- Homes and vehicles can suffer significant property damage.
We need to take a closer look at whether our current drainage systems are properly maintained, adequately designed, and capable of handling the amount of rainfall our city experiences.
We shouldn’t have to wait for another disaster to start asking these questions.
WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE?
We are calling on the City of Port St. Lucie to take meaningful action and make improving our existing infrastructure a priority.
1. A CITYWIDE DRAINAGE ASSESSMENT
We want a thorough evaluation of our existing drainage systems, canals, retention ponds, and stormwater facilities.
- Identify neighborhoods most vulnerable to flooding.
- Determine where existing systems are falling short.
- Evaluate drainage capacity and maintenance needs.
- Make the findings available to the public.
We need to understand where the problems are before we can properly address them.
2. MODERNIZE OUR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
Outdated or insufficient drainage infrastructure needs attention.
- Invest in drainage upgrades.
- Improve water flow and stormwater capacity where needed.
- Implement modern flood prevention solutions.
- Address areas where existing systems cannot adequately handle heavy rainfall.
3. PRIORITIZE EXISTING NEIGHBORHOODS
Residents who already live here deserve to see their neighborhoods receive the attention and investment they need.
- Identify and prioritize areas with recurring flooding.
- Direct funding toward neighborhoods with the greatest infrastructure needs.
- Address existing drainage problems before they cause further property damage.
- Homeowners shouldn’t have to experience repeated flooding before their concerns are taken seriously.
4. EXPLORE BETTER WAYS TO MANAGE STORMWATER
Traditional drainage systems aren’t the only solution.
We want the city to explore additional methods of managing excess rainwater, including:
- Rain gardens and bioswales.
- Permeable pavement that allows water to soak into the ground.
- Preserving and restoring natural wetlands.
- Improving retention and detention ponds.
- Expanding natural stormwater absorption and filtration.
These solutions can work alongside traditional drainage systems to help reduce flooding throughout our community.
5. HOLD FUTURE DEVELOPMENT TO HIGHER INFRASTRUCTURE STANDARDS
We aren’t against Port St. Lucie growing. We want to see our city succeed.
But development needs to come with the infrastructure necessary to support it.
- Carefully evaluate the impact of new developments on surrounding neighborhoods.
- Ensure adequate drainage and stormwater management before approving additional development.
- Consider the impact on existing roads and public infrastructure.
- Require necessary infrastructure improvements when new projects place additional demands on existing systems.
New growth should not come at the expense of the residents who are already here.
6. MAKE INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING MORE TRANSPARENT
Residents deserve to know how our tax dollars are being used and what is being done to prevent future flooding.
We are calling for a publicly available infrastructure improvement plan that includes:
- Identified drainage and infrastructure problem areas.
- Planned improvement projects and their estimated costs.
- How these projects will be funded.
- Expected timelines for completion.
- Regular updates on progress and completed work.
- We don’t just want promises. We want to see a plan, a budget, and actual progress.
A CALL TO OUR CITY LEADERSHIP
We formally call upon the current and incoming Mayor of Port St. Lucie, along with the entire City Council, to take this issue seriously and make infrastructure improvements a priority.
Regardless of who holds office, our community deserves leadership that puts public safety, responsible development, and the long-term well-being of residents first.
We are asking our city officials to commit to evaluating our current infrastructure, allocating the necessary funding, and establishing a clear plan to address the problems that have been affecting our community.
THIS IS BIGGER THAN POLITICS. THIS IS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF PORT ST. LUCIE.
OUR CITY, OUR FUTURE
Port St. Lucie is home to thousands of families, business owners, and residents who have invested their lives in this community.
We should be able to feel confident that our homes, roads, and neighborhoods are being properly maintained and prepared for the challenges ahead.
We shouldn’t have to accept severe flooding as just another part of living here.
Growth is important, but so is taking care of what we’ve already built.
It’s time to shift our priorities toward improving the city we already have, protecting the people who live here, and building a foundation that can support future generations.
IT’S TIME TO INVEST IN THE CITY WE ALREADY HAVE BEFORE BUILDING MORE OF THE CITY WE DON’T NEED.
Join us in calling for a safer, stronger, and more prepared Port St. Lucie.
