The passing of Pope Francis is an opportunity to take stock of both his legacy and the way forward for the Roman Catholic Church under his successor. Since the Pope is a global moral authority, these matters can touch the lives of all of us, not just Catholics or even Christians alone.

That is especially true of policies the late Pope adopted towards the Chinese Communist Party, reflected in four successive versions of a deal the Vatican struck during Francis’ papacy, starting in 2018. While these accords are treated as a state secret, they clearly have undermined Catholics of China, their clergy and churches, while empowering the CCP’s dictator, Xi Jinping, to supplant them with Marxist, atheist, so-called “patriotic” churches, with him as their god.

Sinicization under Xi Jinping has brought intolerable abuses: bulldozed churches, crosses torn down, crucifixes removed and replaced with images of Xi, scripture rewritten, spies and surveillance cameras embedded in churches, priests and bishops detained and disappeared, and children are banned from worship and catechism.

It's a slow-rolling genocide of the Catholic faith in China facilitated by the Vatican.

On May 24, the Vatican will celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China. Pope Leo XIV must address this legacy and take corrective action. Specifically, he must Reveal the Deal with the Chinese Communist Party, and then Repeal the Deal.
