The Issue

Act 58 of the 94 calls to action states: " We call upon the Pope to issue an apology to survivors, their families, and communities for the Roman Catholic Church's role in the spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children in Catholic-run residential schools."

On March 28, 2018 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau requested that the Pope apologize on behalf of the catholic church's role in residential schools. Pope Francis declined, refusing to give the Indigenous community the apology they deserve.

Although Pope Francis didn't personally abuse the children who were forced into Residential schools, he still is one of the main faces of Christianity. An apology directly from the Pope himself would aid in the healing process from the trauma Residential schools caused. It has been two years since Pope Francis declined the request to apologize to the Indigenous Community, so I suggest all citizens of Canada advocate for justice, and demand the Pope apologizes to help survivors of Residential Schools to heal.

I believe that is completely unjust that Indigenous children were not only forced to attend these harsh schools, where nuns and priests attempted to erase the 'Indian' from the child, but now they don't even get an apology? Perhaps we cannot undo the past.. because of this, I believe that it is important that we help the Indigenous community heal and do everything in our power to do so.
