Just days after a violent mob turned an orthopedic hospital in Udaipur into a battleground, the state of Maharashtra has witnessed an even more disturbing attack on our medical fraternity—this time, led directly by an elected political leader.
On July 6, 2026, the civic-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Kalyan (Thane district) became a crime scene. A ruling Shiv Sena corporator, Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, along with his political goons, brutally assaulted two duty doctors (Dr. Srishti Bawiskar and Dr. Vaibhav Salunkhe) and female nurses inside the hospital premise.
A 33-year-old pregnant patient was admitted to the hospital, and a sonography revealed that the baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped twice around its neck—a critical complication. Because the hospital's 10 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds were completely full, the doctors ethically and responsibly advised the family to shift to another facility with an available NICU to ensure the newborn's survival.
Instead of understanding that doctors cannot magically create an empty ICU bed, the relatives called in their local corporator. The GOON RAMESH MHATRE arrived with a mob of supporters, barged into the ward, and began ruthlessly hitting and abusing the doctors and nurses. To make matters worse, his workers physically pinned down the hospital security guards so that no one could come to the rescue of the medical staff.
The entire horrific assault was caught on CCTV. The video clearly shows a politician using his muscle power to beat the very "angels in white" who keep our healthcare system running.
This is the ultimate proof of why local state protection acts are a complete joke. When lawmakers and elected corporators become the lawbreakers, who is left to protect the doctors?
It took a total work-boycott protest by the local hospital staff and a massive shutdown threat from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kalyan-Dombivli units for the police to even register a formal FIR against this politician.
Doctors and nurses cannot be held responsible for the systemic deficiencies of government infrastructure. We cannot build extra ICU beds on the spot to satisfy a politician's ego. How can our young medical professionals work under the constant threat of being beaten up by local leaders and their political henchmen?
An Appeal to Every Citizen and Parent
Watch the CCTV footage of this incident before you respect a local politician, and think twice before you encourage your children to enter the medical profession in India. In this country, saving a life is a crime if it inconveniences a local VIP.
Stop Shielding Political Goons
We demand that the Maharashtra State Government and Chief Minister stop shielding their political allies. Assaulting a healthcare worker while they are trying to save a newborn baby should not be treated as a petty political scuffle. Anyone—regardless of their political designation, party, or power—who raises a hand against a doctor or nurse must be immediately arrested under non-bailable, anti-terror equivalent laws and permanently stripped of their political seats.
