Major cause of pollution of Mula Mutha Rivers is Untreated Sewage discharged everyday because of inadequate capacity of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). Only 50-60% of total sewage generated in city is treated. This has resulted in unprecedented pollution of Mula Mutha Rivers and has also become a public health hazard. Recent studies have found 25 different hazardous Bacteria which have become Antibiotic Resistant.

So it was planned to install new STPs to ensure 100% sewage treatment. Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has sanctioned soft loan of almost 1000 Cr. INR for this project. This funding and project has been cleared from Central Govt almost 2 years back in 2016.

However, PMC's attitude to give the least priority has resulted in absolutely no progress on this front even after 2 years. It took 2 years for PMC just to appoint a consultant for the said important project linked with health of people.

And now according to the latest news, the funds reserved for execution of JICA project are diverted to settle old dues of Irrigation Dept. And there is no answer given by authorities as to how much delay it will cause for execution of JICA project.

This shows how the city administration looks at JICA project. The shortfall of funding because of earlier mismanagement is being funded by JICA project funds. Public health comes last in priority list.

If we, the Punekars, do not pressurize PMC, this project will continue to be treated as lowest priority project and our Rivers will continue to flow as gutters affecting health of 50 Lakhs Punekars.

Please sign & spread this petition as much as you can to make PMC act on this important issue linked to our health on top priority!
