I am sharing my story with immense sadness and urgency, as a single mother and middle-aged woman trying to navigate Canada's immigration system. Despite my dedication to maintaining legal status in this country, I have been abruptly refused with no substantial explanation. I find myself trapped in a bureaucratic limbo where I do not fit any traditional immigration pathway. I stand at a crossroads, unwilling to beautify, manicure or manipulate job descriptions just to sway an immigration official because my job was just a teer 4 position and not considered "in demand" despite my former employer's struggle to keep the position filled. This process is grueling and forces many into ethical dilemmas, simply to secure a future for their families in Canada.

Canada's Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) handles numerous immigration applications, yet humanitarian and compassionate grounds applications, which are often the last resort for vulnerable individuals, are not given the same priority as other, more conventional pathways. This discrepancy leaves many individuals, like myself, in a precarious position, waiting indefinitely for a decision that could impact our lives drastically. Current waiting time for processing is over 10 years, this is a matter of life and death to some of us, we might not survive that long if we are not heard and helped.

In 2022, Canada saw an influx of over 431,000 new immigrants, with pathways like Express Entry and family sponsorship receiving refreshed boosts to expedite processing times. Meanwhile, those applying on humanitarian and compassionate grounds face extended processing periods with little to no communication from IRCC. This delay poses significant emotional and financial stress, leaving already vulnerable individuals in further jeopardy.

I propose that Canada implements a streamlined system for processing humanitarian applications with the same efficiency seen in other pathways. Additionally, providing alternative pathways allowing individuals awaiting decisions to maintain legal status would greatly alleviate the risks and uncertainty vulnerable populations face. These changes not only reflect the compassionate values that Canada is renowned for but also recognize the diverse circumstances that applicants may encounter.

The current framework does not suffice for those in need of urgent protection and acceptance. To policymakers, it's critical to recognize and address these inequities to genuinely support those looking to call Canada home.
