The Issue

Our seniors are at the heart of our community, yet they face unbearable wait times for long term care beds on the Sunshine Coast, BC. At present, over 80 seniors are waiting tirelessly for their placement in long term care within the lower Sunshine Coast, where only 208 beds are available. Tragically, this results in a daunting waitlist spanning anywhere between 1 to 4 years.

This dire situation has also significantly impacted our local healthcare facilities. Currently, our hospital is more than 50% occupied by patients who should be receiving care in long term facilities instead. This is not only an inefficient use of hospital resources but also detrimental to the well-being of our seniors. Hospitals, by nature, are not equipped to provide the requisite stimulation that seniors need to thrive — leading to isolation and a lack of adequate service.

Moreover, the hospital staff primarily consists of more than 50% travel or agency nurses. While these dedicated professionals do their best, the financial burden on the healthcare system is immense, as agency nurses cost considerably more than regular staff nurses.

The situation calls for urgent and decisive action. We urge the Health Minister of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health Executives to recognize the urgency of this crisis and take immediate steps to reduce the waiting period for long term care beds. By investing in more bed spaces and ensuring adequate staffing with permanent professionals, we can greatly improve the quality of life for our seniors and optimize healthcare costs within the region. Two former facilities in Sechelt; Totem Lodge and Shorncliffe Intermediate Care Home sit vacant while seniors are left to wait years for a bed.

Together, we can bring positive change for the seniors in our community. By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to a cause that seeks dignity, respect, and necessary care for our aged people, who deserve nothing less. Join us in our endeavour to ensure seniors on the Sunshine Coast, BC, receive the care they need in a timely and respectful manner. Please sign this petition.
