THE THEME TODAY IS DOOR.
I can remember the DOOR-to-DOOR CAMPAIGN when Susie Dillon, MLA knocked on my DOOR, asking for support.

I have been trying to GET A FOOT IN THE DOOR of the Progressive Conservative government, regarding the Community Treatment Order amendment.

I mostly LEAVE POLITICS AT THE DOOR, but I have had to ask for assistance to save our son’s life. He was homeless on the streets in Toronto. We encountered REVOLVING DOORS at the Toronto hospitals.

Thankfully, Minister of Health and Wellness, Mark McLane, granted our request for a medical transfer home, where Andrew is safe in hospital and improving slowly with medications.

I was hoping that the PC government would LEAVE THE DOOR open for further CTO discussions. However, their decision to legislate the most restrictive CTO in Canada was done BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. I thought I would try to OPEN A FEW DOORS and make things possible that were not possible before.

In addition, I BEAT A PATH TO THEIR DOOR daily, hoping that the mentally ill would receive the amendment they needed to qualify for a CTO.

I am sure you have heard the expression, “SHUT THE BARN DOOR AFTER THE HORSE HAS GONE.” Minister of Health and Wellness has stated that he would consider a CTO amendment after 24 months. As you know, it is too late to try and fix something after the problem occurred. YOU CAN NOT REPLACE THE LIFE OF A LOVED ONE!!

I believe the Progressive Conservative government has CLOSED THE DOOR on the Community Treatment Order amendment. I have been advised that the proposed P.E.I. Legislation reveals that there is no mention of the Mental Health Act or the CTO.

The DOORS at the new Mental Health and Addictions Emergency Department will open February 27, 2024. Healthcare staff will create treatment plans which I assume will include Community Treatment Orders. There will be countless mentally ill patients going to this department, as many Islanders will NOT qualify for a CTO. Does this make sense to you?

With a CTO they would be able to stay in the community on their medications, and away from the hospital DOORS!

FORTUNE KNOCKS ONCE AT EVERY MAN’S DOOR. The PC government has the opportunity of a lifetime to help secure the safety of the mentally ill with a CTO amendment. Will the PC government OPEN THE DOOR and bring a CTO amendment forward in the 2024 spring session beginning February 27, 2024?
