UPDATE FEBRUARY 14, 2024:
TODAY THE THEME IS BODY PARTS.
My mother told me that, “IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR HEALTH, YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING.” I never really understood what she meant until I was diagnosed with breast cancer twice. I believe she was partly right, but we also have faith, family and friends. They helped me keep my CHIN UP and got me BACK ON MY FEET.
Several months ago, I HEADED OFF on a journey. I am lobbying for a Community Treatment Order amendment and keeping an EYE ON THE CTO, as it helps the mentally ill stay on their medications, in the community. I am STICKING MY NECK OUT to support the needs of mentally ill Islanders, including our son.
I have PICKED THE BRAIN of two CTO experts namely, Dr. Richard O’Reilly and Dr. John Gray. They have assured me that a P.E.I. CTO amendment is required, as it is too restrictive, and few Islanders will qualify. Their opinions are based on research and not OFF THE TOP OF THEIR HEADS. They are OLD HANDS with a wealth of CTO knowledge and support my efforts.
I have asked the question, “Why was the restrictive CTO chosen over the flexible New Brunswick CTO model? Unfortunately, the PC Party has been TIGHT-LIPPED. I was given the COLD SHOULDER. Is the reason because the CTO Program would COST AN ARM AND A LEG?
My Facebook posts have EYE-CATCHING idioms and images to draw attention. Perhaps some EYEBROWS have been raised. I had to get my thoughts OFF MY CHEST. I am endeavouring to get the PC Party to GIVE ME A HAND with this important issue.
It is my belief that the CTO amendment in the 2024 spring session is a NO-BRAINER. Some decisions are difficult to make. The PC Party must FACE THE FACTS and take action before it is too late. Lives could be lost without the CTO amendment.
I do not believe that the PC Party will HAVE THE HEART to reject a CTO amendment. I have a GUT FEELING that the PC Party WILL DO THE RIGHT THING!
A community treatment order ensures that a mentally ill person stays on their medication and provides them with a healthy life in the community. P.E.I. now has a CTO, but it is so restrictive that Andrew and many others will not qualify.
I received this post from Cheryl Wertman. "I’m a retired nurse who used to work downtown TO with street involved folks. I’ve seen many Andrew’s and feel CTOs should be much more readily accessible when persons are unable to care for themselves and are at risk of imminent health and danger."

The present CTO is like giving a battery operated truck to a child without the battery. And saying, "The truck is good enough for now, I will give you the battery to operate it after "24" months." The P.E.I. CTO is as useless as this!
In my opinion, I do not believe that the PC Party Ministers and MLAs realized the negative impact the restrictive CTO would have on Islanders, like Andrew and others. I believe in my heart they will amend the CTO in the 2024 Spring Session, because it is the RIGHT THING TO DO!
