Following the timely and encouraging words from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Denis O'Callaghan on the need to urgently prioritise climate action, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Councillors voting this Monday 12 Feb must REJECT the deeply flawed, widely opposed and environmentally damaging Part 8 plans for Shanganagh Park in Shankill which would see the removal of even more of the park’s already diminishing accessible green spaces so important for passive recreation, physical health and mental well-being for young and old alike and of all abilities.
We are in a climate and biodiversity emergency - not a sports facility emergency - and our elected representatives must see that and act accordingly unless they wish to expose themselves in an election year to accusations of greenwashing.
Instead, more viable solutions (which are economically sound, socially acceptable and environmentally sustainable) to upgrade existing pitches used by sports clubs in and near the park should be prioritised to improve playability and accessibility.
