“It is crucial that we all take actions which safeguard nature, climate, and biodiversity.”

Strong but very welcome and timely words from a recent speech on climate action submitted by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Denis O'Callaghan for publication in this month’s SCAN Shankill - we couldn’t have put it better ourselves!

Will he now back this up and show real leadership to encourage his Council colleagues to reject the current, widely opposed and environmentally damaging plans for Shanganagh Park?

Or will the prioritisation of yet more pitches in a public park be at the expense of nature, climate, and biodiversity be the real legacy?

With an election on the horizon, anything other than a rejection of this plan will cast doubt on the sincerity of climate words compared to climate actions and risk Councillor and Council exposure to further accusations of #GreenWashing.

More from Cllr O’Callaghan:

“The serious impacts in recent years from extreme weather events show us the truly enormous cost of not acting.”

“The challenges facing us from climate change are stark as climate change is not only sudden events, but slower onset events with compounding impacts.”

“It is crucial that we all take actions which safeguard, climate, and biodiversity. The presence of a thriving natural world and stable climate is indispensable for our overall well-being. It is so important that we maintain its health, as ours is linked to it. Our commitment to protecting nature today will yield substantial benefits for future generations. The decisions we make today and the upcoming years will dictate our collective future.”

“All of us, individuals, communities, businesses, and government alike are asked to take ownership of the commitment to tackle climate change…”.
