Please HELP SAVE THE " Faison (Harlem) Firehouse Theater" as a Community Youth Haven
The Issue
I've lived in the Bronx with my son who has autism. Our experiences have amplified my awareness about the importance of inclusive community centers. Unfortunately, the "Harlem Firehouse Theater," an iconic space that has been providing cultural nourishment for our Black and Dominican community, is under threat. I believe it is essential for New York City to purchase and preserve this theater, not only as a historical landmark but also as a welcoming sanctuary for our youth.
Given the grim crime statistics in our community, it is vital that we provide our young with safe spaces where they can spend their time productively and learn valuable skills. Harlem's crime rate, which is greater than 95% as compared to New York communities (source: NeighborhoodScout), further underscores the urgency of this issue.
Moreover, such environments are necessary for young people like my son who need a supportive setting to manage their conditions and ease their integration into society. In the U.S., approximately 1 in 44 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (source: CDC), emphasizing the crucial need for spaces that foster inclusivity.
By saving the Harlem Firehouse Theater, we'll be preserving a piece of Harlem’s cultural heritage and establishing a safe haven for the youth of the Black/Dominican community – a place that can provide artistic outlets, mentorship opportunities, and autism-friendly resources.
To save our theater and safeguard our children's future, I humbly request your support. Please sign this petition and urge the City of New York to acquire and protect the Harlem Firehouse Theater as a community youth haven.
