Please HELP Protect this Irish Heritage Site and Historic Landscape from a Glamping site
The Issue
Keenaghan Abbey & Cemetery, Belleek, County Fermanagh
If you are familiar with beautiful County Fermanagh, you will be aware of it's stunning lakes, history & heritage sites, astounding wildlife and 'picture postcard' settings like here at Keenaghan Abbey & Cemetery, peacefully nestled on the shore of Keenaghan Lough, near the famous pottery village of Belleek.
Unfortunately, the developers have appealed the planners decision to Refuse the major development and this unspoiled, spiritual and tranquil place is still currently under threat. The proposal is still for a large Glamping site development, with a Bar, Restaurant, other amenity buildings including a car-park, which will have a "Significant Adverse Impact" as stated by local authorities own Historical Environment Division (HED).
This predominantly undeveloped rural landscape, greatly contributes to the significant and distinctive character of this place and the quality of it's setting. To the local community and beyond, as demonstrated by the unprecedented response to the planning application on Fermanagh Planning Portal Ref: LA10/2022/0946/F, the unique characteristics of this area create a profound 'Sense of Place' The emotional bond, feeling of comfort, belonging, peace and a indeed a spiritual connection to this place, is now feared to be lost forever. This currently is a natural retreat to the community and all who visit here, which feeds into their overall well-being. Places like here at Keenaghan are rare and should be protected for the generations to come, now more than ever.
Not only will this proposed development have a significant adverse impact on the heritage assets and the landscape surrounding it, it will have a detrimental impact on this entire environment. From the wildlife habitats to the waterways.
This is a highly sensitive area and one of the last few remaining 'picture postcard' settings.
Please support us in protecting this Heritage Site at Keenaghan Abbey and the equally important surrounding Environment and Historic Landscape. We owe it to the generations to come, once these special places are developed, on any scale, they are lost forever.
Thank You so very much! X
