The issue

Hi Everyone

My name is Chloe & anyone that knows me (or anyone I've spoken to for more than three minutes knows), I am a huge animal lover, love birds & especially have a soft spot for pigeons.

Since moving back to the city & becoming the "pigeon lady" again, I have helped exactly 190 sick, injured & stringfoot pigeons in 13 months. I have an overwhelming need (or perhaps moral obligation) to publicly raise concerns about multiple injured pigeons currently located at The Garden on 742 Newcastle Street in Leederville, Western Australia.

I volunteer for bird rescue organisations & a pigeon suffering from stringfoot was reported at The Garden. I successfully caught her & she is still recovering from nerve damge but there are also other pigeons with the same stringfoot issue.

The two pigeons I have seen are juveniles & suffering from severe stringfoot, one has string wrapped tightly around every toe on both feet who is visibly in significant pain, struggling to even stand & therefore, can't forage for food. The other pigeon has clumps of hair wrapped tighly around one foot & can't bare weight either. Without treatment, conditions like this results in the loss of circulation, infection, loss of toes &/or whole feet, permanent disability & prolonged, unnecessary suffering.

I have attempted to rescue these pigeons on numerous occasions over the past six weeks & despite explaining that I was only placing a tiny amount of oats down (twice) for the sole purpose of rescuing an injured bird, the staff prevented me from rescuing them, called the police & eventually issued me with a trespass notice.

My grandfather also visited the pub to speak to management & request that another rescuer gain access to assist the pigeons but that request was also denied. As a result, both pigeons remain at The Garden without treatment despite help being readily available.

It doesn't matter if some people think they are "just" pigeons, it is about animal welfare & a bird suffering unnecessarily. I believe that no animal should be left to endure preventable, unimaginable pain & slowly die when help is available but apparently not everyone feels the same way. It is extremely distressing & heartbreaking to watch an innocent animal suffer, especially when I know it could be helped if given the chance.

If anyone who is as concerned as I am about pigeons & animal welfare, please help to raise awareness, sign, share, comment or encourage The Garden to allow a rescuer to safely remove the birds for treatment.

I have attached photos of the pigeon that was rescued from this establishment & how it is easily treated/prevented with just a pair of mini scissors & tweezers.

The goal is to raise awareness & help these pigeons receive the care they urgently need.

Thank you 😊
