Speedy R.I.P. - The unanswered questions

We're all still stunned by the unwelcome news of Speedy's death but the more we considered developments the more our questions grew. Yesterday, we asked a person who had tended to Speedy for many years to write the following letter to CHL's trustees and asked them to address the outstanding issues. We will, of course appraise you of their response. 13th February 2018 Dear Ms Ansdell and Doctor Dow, On Sunday the 11th of February 2018 I and MH, horseman formerly employed by CHL learned of the untimely and needless death of Speedy, the 15-year-old Clydesdale until recently in the charity’s care. Reportedly, CHL was informed of Speedy's death before, or on, February 5th. Later that week CHL’s Chawton House Shire Horses Facebook page, which had previously been employed to publish a ‘letter’ from Speedy lionising his new lease of life and his new owner, JH was deleted. A staff meeting then took place advising CHL’s employees of Speedy's demise yet I, Mr H, Speedy’s former sponsors and admirers, nor the public at large have yet to receive the courtesy of notification. Although I am no longer employed at CHL I retain a duty of care to all the animals I have tended to. It is a responsibility that I take seriously. Speedy had a huge following and I and all his fans have questions regarding the circumstances of his death. Specifically: · What was the cause of Speedy’s death? · Did he die of an illness, in which case what? Was he involved in an accident? Was he ‘put to sleep’, if so, why? · Was CHL involved in any of the decision-making process regarding his care, if so how & what options were considered, or was the charity informed ex post facto of his death? · Has CHL requested the return of Speedy’s tack? I believe it should be used to create a suitable memorial to a much-loved former resident. · Has CHL requested the return of Speedy’s ashes so that they can be scattered on the estate as has been the custom with other fallen horses? · What were the relevant contractual obligations between CHL & JH to these circumstances? · Why has CHL not displayed transparency and common courtesy in advising myself, Mr H and other interested and affected parties of his death?
