The new bill has now been introduced in this year’s legislative session. It is SB14. SB14 is an amendment to our existing legislation that would simply make it illegal, as it already is in every other state, to own, possess, breed, train, sell or transfer dogs and/or their offspring for dogfighting. The language has been changed from last year’s bill in order to make it clear that we are talking about two dogs fighting each other, not dogs engaged in squirrel or other hunting activities as some legislators claimed last year. Kentucky’s legislators have made it a habit to prioritize the interests of a hunting group called the Kentucky Houndsmen Association over the interests of 80 – 90 % of KY Citizens. This association’s president, Doug Morgan, has made it his mission, and the mission of his entire association, to oppose ALL animal welfare legislation that comes before the legislators every year! Even when it does not affect hunters or their interests! Thankfully, a few members of this group understand that we’re not fighting hunting, we are fighting the people who breed, train and sell dogs (LEGALLY – until the law is changed) for the purpose of dogfighting, in our state. Many hunters care for their hunting dogs better than some pet owners do. We respect that and want them to understand that our agenda is not against them, but against the evil people who perpetrate unspeakable acts of cruelty against dogs. We’re unsure why others in the group, and particularly some of our legislators, oppose this legislation. There is speculation that some of our legislators are actually members of that group and vote those interests instead of the interests of the majority of KY citizens. It is time for all Kentucky rescue groups, Kentucky animal shelter workers and volunteers, Kentucky cross posters, transporters, and EACH AND EVERY Kentucky citizen who cares about the welfare of animals to stand together and show our legislators that we represent the majority, not the Kentucky Houndsmen Association, and it’s time for them to listen to US! Below are suggestions on how you can help. We need Kentuckians to step up to that plate! Call 800-372-7181 and leave a message for Senator Paul Hornback, Senator Damon Thayer, and your individual legislators asking for their support on SB14. To find out who your legislators are you can go to www.lrc.ky.gov Then call or email Mr. Doug Morgan, President of the Kentucky Houndsmen Association, at 606-783-1387 email: bigo.hunter@yahoo.com and respectfully ask him and his group to stop opposing SB14. Tell him that hunting is not affected by SB14. That every other state in the country has already passed legislation with this, or similar language, and that hunting has not been impacted in those states. Be polite, but be firm in any contact, (phone or email) you make. For those of you who are not Kentucky citizens but still want to help, please continue to spread the word about the petition and get as many signers as possible! Share, share, share! And, as always, donations to the GoFundMe account are greatly appreciated! Every dime donated is used to either fight this battle or to help animals in need in Kentucky! Not one cent goes for any other purpose! We can do this! We can all be the voices of the voiceless! Here is a link to view the bill: http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/16RS/SB14/bill.pdf
