My community, our beloved pets, and I suffer terribly due to the rampant disregard of laws prohibiting the discharge of fireworks in residential areas. An increasing number of people are ignoring this law, to the detriment of the peace and safety of our community, and particularly, our pets. The unauthorized display of fireworks has become a source of trauma for many pets, including my own. The dread that sets in with each major celebratory occasion is immeasurable whether it's Guy Fawkes Day, Deewali, or New Year’s.

My dog, a cherished member of our family, was diagnosed with anxiety due to the terrifying noise of fireworks discharges. Countless vet visits, calming tablets, and sleepless nights later, my plea is simple: we need our government to step in.

My sister sent me a message late at night. This is what my sister wrote….

”My Zeus was devastated. I was In tears. We took Henna into the house and consoled her.. But sky and Zeus were literally suffering outside. Sky was a bit brave but Zeus was crying like a baby pleading to us to bring him in. I couldn't handle it. I actually just covered my head and went to sleep just to block out the agony that the dogs were going through 💔”

Anecdotal evidence aside, studies affirm that fireworks can indeed lead to a spike in pets' anxiety level and consequent trips to the vet during festive periods where fireworks are frequently used. Demand for sedatives such as Alprazolam spikes around the Fourth of July in the U.S., a similar trend noticed during Guy Fawkes in the UK (JAVMA, 2013).

Given the impact this issue has on our community’s comfort, safety, and finances, it is critical our government ramps up enforcement of fireworks discharge laws in residential areas. I appeal to our government to assign our police force to carry out more arrests or issue fines to people who choose personal enjoyment over community safety and wellbeing. Let us secure the peaceful co-existence we all deserve by respecting and enforcing these laws.

I sincerely hope that law enforcement will be put into place during the upcoming festive season which is +-2 months away, when fireworks will be used to celebrate Christmas and New Year.
