But hang with us. (The early bird gets the worm and all that). We’ve got something smashing to tell you and then something even more smashing-er to ask you.
We want to do good this Christmas, (that’s the smashing bit) and we need you to jump right on this sleigh and help us out (that’s the smashing-er bit – the spirit of Christmas – all of us pulling together to make things fly).
There are two centres for disabled kids in Norwich that offer fantastic ‘short breaks’ for disabled children and their families. They are kitted out with some fab things like sensory rooms and wheelchair roundabouts BUT they have next to ZERO REPRESENTATION of disabled children in their toy boxes.
So, we’ve decided to shout out to you lot to help us change that for our big 2018 Festive fundraiser. We are looking to raise £1000 to furnish both of these centres with dolls with leg splints (AFOs), hearing aids, wheelchairs, glasses, white canes, jigsaws showing guide dogs, remote controlled toy wheelchairs, the works! These kids need to see their experiences positively reflected back to them in the toys and environments around them to grow positive self-esteem and a proud disabled identity. If you never see yourself anywhere in books, films, TV, toys, you feel invisible (not good). If you see yourself, you feel valued and included. Simples.
It’s a fab Chrimbly project. But as ever, we can’t do it without you lot, the smashing smashers who have followed and supported our work from the day dot, way back in 2015, when we noticed the cultural marginalisation festering in the toy box and decided to do something about it. (Lego didn’t even have a wheelchair mini-figure back then – we soon sorted that one with your change.org signatures).
All you have to do is bung us a tenner, a twenty-er, a fifty-er or get really “Ho, ho, ho” and flutter a one hundred-er down the chimney. Then kick back and munch on a mince pie and feel, well all warm and Santa-ry!
