The Issue

Borrego Springs is a beautiful desert community, but summer can make the heat feel like it takes over the entire town. I’m Mateo, and although I’m not from Borrego Springs, I’ve spent time walking around downtown and have seen how difficult it can be when there’s very little shade. It’s not just visitors—residents, local businesses, and wildlife are all affected by the extreme summer temperatures.

Downtown is the heart of the community, but during the hottest months, walking around can be uncomfortable because there aren’t many shaded areas to escape the sun. I think planting more native, desert-friendly trees could make a real difference. Even small trees around 5–8 feet tall could provide some shade now and grow into larger shaded areas over time.

The community could also play an important role in making this happen. With permission from local officials and property owners, residents, volunteers, schools, environmental groups, and local businesses could help identify suitable locations, plant trees, and care for them as they grow. Working together could make the project more affordable, meaningful, and easier to maintain over time.

More trees could make downtown cooler, more comfortable, and more welcoming for everyone. They could also give local wildlife places to rest and provide people with relief from the intense heat. By working together, the community could gradually create more shaded areas throughout downtown.

I want to help make a change in Borrego Springs. One tree might not seem like much, but planting several trees throughout downtown could gradually change how the community feels during the summer. Please support this petition and help bring more shade and greenery to downtown Borrego Springs.
