We need Plan B: A Mini-Primary and an Open Convention

It will soon be too late to fire up a democratic Plan B. Without one, we will be left in chaos or with an undemocratic back-room deal.

Jim Clyburn, who saved Biden in 2020, has called for a “mini-primary,” saying, “There will definitely be other candidates.” Yasha Mounk, James Carville, Ezra Klein, and Nate Silver agree.

Even if Kamala Harris is chosen, it will enhance her credibility and our enthusiasm if she is picked in an Open Convention after some debates or Town Halls.

So far, there is no Plan B!  That's dangerous.  But a good Plan B could win the election. It would generate intense excitement and publicity, and the press just loves a come-back-kid story. Please Help This Happen!

President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee,
We urgently request that you begin preparations for a swift and effective "Mini-Primary" to ensure Democratic voters have a voice in selecting our candidate.
       The hope of restoring the Democrats' reputation as the true representatives of the people depends on a Mini-Primary and an open convention.

Note that the petition does not ask Biden to step down. It would never reach him. But we have a good chance of reaching the right person at the DNC and some opinion columnists at major papers — if it gets enough signatures.

 

 

A Mini-Primary cannot elect delegates—that’s over and done. However, the Democrats could conduct high-quality polls after the debates to narrow the field and, after the last debate, report on which candidates have the best chance of beating Trump.
       Once Biden withdraws, the delegates will be free. They will surely pay attention to such polling results, which would be their best source of information on the will of Democratic voters.
       There’s no excuse for doing any less to end this nightmare emergency. Top Democrats can easily pick a broad field of potential nominees. Setting up two or three debates can be done quickly, and the Party conducts frequent polls for internal use during campaigns. These could be made public before the convention.
       There is no excuse for the DNC to sit on its hands while our teams heads toward discord and disaster. Please take a couple of minutes to sign and tell a friend or two. The web is fantastic at spreading the word quickly if people put in even the smallest effort. Here at #BidenPlanB we will keep working hard to give Democratic voters a voice.
