My Dog Is NOT luggage. We demand from Aeroflot Russian Airlines humanity in transporting animals.

My dog Marvel is my best friend, and we travel together. On the 14th January, we took a flight with Aeroflot Russian Airlines from Perm to Berlin with transit through Moscow SVO; at boarding, in Moscow, the employee of Aeroflot confirmed my dog is already on board, and I should not worry.

Yet Marvel did not arrive in Berlin, and I couldn’t get any information from airlines except “for us, he is a piece of luggage and will arrive at the next convenience of airline within three days.”

They sent me to fill a “missing luggage form” to the Lost and Found. Nobody could give information on what happened and why, if my dog was alive, in what condition if someone gives him water or food.
Luckily Aeroflot sent Marvel with the night flight the same day, and he arrived 7 hours after me: dehydrated and terrified. 
A couple of days later, another passenger was flying Aeroflot from NY with transit through Moscow SVO; his two cats died after being thrown out from aircraft in a manner suitcase are handled.

We call Aeroflot Russian Airlines to revise the regulations of animal handling. Instead of branding the Living Beings as “luggage,” accept the fact our pets are passengers with special needs, for they are defenseless and fragile. 

When I told my story on social media, many came forward in comments speaking about their past experiences traveling Aeroflot with their pets. Their loved ones returned in damaged crates, with critical for animal survival delays, and in some cases dead.

We take the route Berlin-Perm-Berlin with Aeroflot every year to see our family in Russia. In 4 years, 3 of Marvel’s transport boxes were broken unrepairable, he survived a lot of stress each time while in transit in a damaged box.

Such conduct and the attitude of the airline towards customers and their pets is unacceptable. 

We demand Aeroflot abide by the Animal Welfare Law of the Russian Federation and IATA LAR regulations, to acknowledge the rights of animals as creatures capable of experiencing both emotional and physical suffering, having a right to live, and to protection from harmful external influences.

Hence, we turn to the management of Aeroflot demanding first of all:

  • Change the status of animals from “Baggage” to “Passenger with special needs”.

In addition to this, we consider the following requirements necessary:

  • Given the fact that Aeroflot is a member of the IATA International Air Transport Association, we urge the company to comply with the international standards for the humane and safe handling of animals IATA (LAR) (Live Animals Regulations); publish the LAR rules on your airline’s website in an accessible language (including Russian) not only the requirements for the owners of the animals but also explain the responsibility of the carrier; without exception, use the IATA Live Animals Acceptance Checklist; fulfill the requirements for continuous training and education (advanced training) of airline and airport employees who are directly involved in the logistics of living things (according to the last 46th edition of the IATA rules for January 2020)
  • We ask the Federal Air Transport Agency to create a control unit to ensure all airlines comply with criteria for the humane treatment of animals in transit. To hold airlines accountable in the form of criminal and punitive damages in situations of gross violations of the rules of animal transportation.
  • Information on location and condition of the animal in transit must be available to the owner at any time from check-in to the flight until arrival.

We ask your support to help change the attitude of one of the biggest airlines flying worldwide with our pets on board.
