The Issue

To: The Ontario Ministry of Education
We, the undersigned parents, educators, students, and concerned citizens of Ontario, respectfully urge the Ontario Ministry of Education to prohibit the use of personal mobile phones by students during the entire school day, including class time, recess, and lunch breaks, across all Ontario schools.
Why This Matters:

 Improved Academic Focus
Mobile phones are a major distraction in schools. Removing them during the school day allows students to focus more effectively on learning and classroom engagement.

 Better Mental Health and Well-Being
Excessive screen use is linked to anxiety, stress, and reduced attention spans. A phone-free school environment supports healthier minds.

 Reduced Social Isolation
Without phones, students are more likely to interact face-to-face, build friendships, and feel a stronger sense of belonging.

 Stronger Social and Communication Skills
In-person conversations help students develop empathy, teamwork, and communication skills that screens cannot replace.

Encouragement of Physical Activity and Group Play
Phone-free breaks motivate students to participate in sports, games, and group activities, improving physical health and cooperation.

Reduction in Cyberbullying During School Hours
Limiting phone access reduces opportunities for online bullying, harassment, and inappropriate content sharing at school.

 Healthier Digital Habits
Schools play a vital role in teaching balanced technology use. Setting boundaries helps students learn self-control and responsible digital behavior.

More Inclusive Learning Environment
Phones can highlight social and economic differences. Removing them during the day promotes equality and inclusion among students.

Our Request:
We respectfully request that the Ontario Ministry of Education implement a province-wide policy banning student use of personal mobile phones throughout the school day, with reasonable exceptions for medical or accessibility needs.
This policy would place students’ education, well-being, and healthy development at the heart of Ontario’s education system.

 Call to Action
We invite parents, educators, and concerned community members across Ontario to sign this petition and stand together for:
✔ Better learning
✔ Stronger social connections
✔ Healthier, more focused schools
Sign now and help create phone-free schools for a stronger future.
