The Issue

As of recent decisions, the Dublin Unified School District board has cut down on the zero period option in 9th grade, with Leadership as the only exception, due to mental health concerns. While this focus on student mental health is important, this policy may unintentionally do the opposite than it intended to.

Many upcoming 9th graders are concerned by this decision, since it doesn't allow them as many educational opportunities, such as exploring interests and completing courses for the future. In turn, this limitation may even increase stress for future students and create additional pressure later in high school, as students are forced to compress courses into fewer years.

Although granting the option to take zero period may seem like a small change, it actually allows many students the possibility to advance in their first year of high school, letting them experience so much more in the future years.

By signing this petition, you can support student choice and encourage the district to reconsider disabling an optional zero period for 9th graders to promote both educational opportunity and mental health.
