PETITION: URGENT RESTORATION OF ELECTRICITY – GREENSTONE CREST RESIDENTS
To: The City of Johannesburg
Relevant Municipal Authorities and Stakeholders
We, the undersigned residents of Greenstone Crest, hereby formally raise our urgent concern and demand immediate intervention regarding the ongoing electricity disconnection affecting our community.
Greenstone Crest consists of approximately 620 residential units, housing an estimated 2,000 residents, all of whom have now been without electricity for 7 consecutive days.
Our Concerns
Inhumane Living Conditions
The prolonged loss of electricity has severely impacted basic living conditions, including access to lighting, food preservation, communication, and safety.
Impact on Vulnerable Residents
Children, the elderly, and individuals with medical needs are disproportionately affected by this outage, placing their health and well-being at risk.
Economic and Financial Prejudice
Residents continue to meet their financial obligations, including municipal-related charges, yet are being deprived of essential services.
Lack of Communication and Resolution
There has been insufficient transparency, communication, and urgency from the relevant parties to resolve this matter.
Our Position
We believe that the continued disconnection of electricity to a residential community of this scale is:
*Unjust and disproportionate
*A violation of our constitutional rights to dignity and basic services
*An unacceptable failure in service delivery to law-abiding, tax-paying citizens
Our Demands
We urgently call on the City of Johannesburg and all responsible stakeholders to:
1.Immediately restore electricity to Greenstone Crest
2.Provide a clear and transparent explanation for the disconnection
3.Engage directly with residents and trustees to resolve the matter sustainably
4.Ensure safeguards are put in place to prevent a recurrence of this situation
Call to Action
We, as residents, stand united in demanding immediate action. This situation has gone on far too long and requires urgent resolution.
