The Issue

💧 Mariakani Residents Have Gone 3+ Years Without Reliable Water! 💧

KIMAWASCO must be held accountable. We call on WASREB and the Ombudsman to investigate prolonged outages, stop unfair billing, and deliver a permanent solution.

For over three years, households in Mariakani Ward have faced frequent, prolonged water shortages. Families are forced to buy expensive water from private bowsers or travel long distances just to meet basic needs. In extreme cases, residents—including women with infants—have been forced to fetch water from open sewers, risking serious health hazards.

This crisis has created a “parallel water economy”, raising concerns about fairness, transparency, and possible irregular practices. Areas like Kivunga are worst affected, with major impacts on health, sanitation, education, and local businesses. Despite repeated complaints, residents continue receiving bills even when no water is supplied.

Why This Petition Matters

Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right under Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya. KIMAWASCO has failed to deliver reliable, accountable services, and regulatory bodies—WASREB and the Ombudsman—have a legal mandate to protect citizens’ rights.

Our Demands:

  1. Investigate the prolonged water outages.
  2. Assess KIMAWASCO’s performance and accountability.
  3. Review billing during no-service periods.
  4. Investigate private water bowser practices and potential irregularities.
  5. Address health and safety risks from unsafe water sources, including sewers.
  6. Direct KIMAWASCO to implement a clear, time-bound solution.
  7. Ensure transparent, timely communication with residents.

How You Can Make a Difference

The Mariakani water crisis affects everyone—families, schools, businesses, and vulnerable residents. Signing and sharing costs nothing, yet it is a powerful way to demand change.
