Petition to the European Parliament on the Urgent Need for Diplomatic Action in the Middle
O problema
Urgent call for action from the European Parliament to prevent further escalation of conflict in the Middle East, protect innocent civilians, safeguard global energy stability, and avert worldwide geostrategic risks.
To the Honourable Members of the European Parliament,
I, the undersigned, hereby submit this petition in light of the growing concern over the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly in the Persian Gulf—an area of vital geopolitical and energy importance for the entire world.
In recent days, we have witnessed attacks on key energy infrastructure, particularly oil refineries, which not only jeopardize the global energy supply but also endanger the lives of millions of innocent civilians. If this escalation continues, the world risks facing a humanitarian and environmental catastrophe, as well as a global economic crisis triggered by a sudden spike in energy prices.
Moreover, the international community cannot ignore the growing threat of nuclear proliferation. The potential acquisition of nuclear weapons by the Iranian regime would represent a breaking point for global security. Such a development would not only exacerbate regional tensions but could also trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, with unpredictable consequences for world peace.
The lack of transparency in Iran’s nuclear programme, combined with ongoing threats against neighbouring states and systematic repression of its own people, makes the prospect of this regime acquiring a nuclear bomb especially alarming. This threat must be addressed with determination, through active diplomacy, rigorous inspections, and effective control mechanisms.
In view of this situation, I urge the European Parliament to:
1. Call on the European Commission and the United Nations to pressure the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect the fundamental rights of its people, including by allowing a free and fair referendum on the country's future, under international supervision.
2. Exercise diplomatic pressure on the Government of Israel to immediately cease all military actions that endanger civilian populations, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
3. Promote an international mediation initiative to reach a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in the region, with the involvement of key stakeholders and regional powers.
4. Strengthen European energy diplomacy by preparing preventive measures to mitigate the impact of potential energy supply shocks originating in the Persian Gulf region.
5. Implement targeted sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for human rights violations in Iran, based on the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
6. Increase financial and political support to Iranian and diaspora civil society organizations that promote democracy, women’s rights, freedom of expression, and access to information both inside and outside Iran.
7. Establish a permanent working group in the European Parliament to monitor the human rights situation in Iran, producing regular reports and policy recommendations.
8. Facilitate safe channels of asylum and protection for political dissidents, journalists, activists, and minorities persecuted by the Iranian regime, ensuring a coordinated European humanitarian response.
9. Encourage European technology platforms to provide secure communication tools and internet access to the Iranian population, notably by supporting alternative networks and anti-censorship technologies.
10. Organize public hearings in the European Parliament with Iranian activists and relatives of political prisoners, giving them a platform and visibility in the international political arena.
11. Reinforce the EU’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation by demanding full cooperation from Iran with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and by supporting all multilateral initiatives aimed at preventing the development of nuclear weapons by authoritarian regimes.
This petition does not seek to take sides in any armed conflict, but rather to appeal for respect for human life, the right of peoples to self-determination, and the preservation of global stability. The Iranian people have shown immense courage in their struggle for freedom and deserve the concrete support of the European Union.
With respect and hope for a shared commitment to peace, freedom, and democracy.
