The Issue

TO: The Members and Chief Executive of Telford & Wrekin Council

WE, the undersigned residents of Telford and Wrekin, petition the Council to implement a local ban on the public sale of consumer fireworks (Category F2 and F3) and prohibit their unsupervised use on residential private property and public land within the borough.

Our Reasoning:

The current level of private, unregulated firework use in our community causes widespread and prolonged distress, risk, and disruption every year:

Vulnerable Residents: The unpredictable noise and sudden flashes from fireworks cause significant anxiety and distress to veterans suffering from PTSD, autistic people, individuals with sensory processing issues, the elderly, and young children.

Animal Welfare: Loud, unpredictable noise severely traumatises pets, livestock, and our local wildlife, leading to panic, injury, and sometimes death.

Anti-Social Behaviour & Safety: Unregulated use contributes to anti-social behaviour, property damage, and places an unnecessary burden on our emergency services due to injuries and small fires.

Our Proposed Solution:

We do not seek to ban fireworks entirely. We propose that the Council supports restricting access and use to:

Licensed, Organised Public Displays Only: Fireworks should only be sold to, and discharged by, professional, licensed operators at authorised community events and celebrations.

Reduced Local Access: This measure will stop the over-the-counter sale of fireworks to the general public in local shops, ensuring that residents can still enjoy high-quality displays without the negative impact of backyard use.

By signing this petition, you urge Telford & Wrekin Council to use its powers and influence to prioritise the welfare and safety of all residents, pets, and wildlife in our town.
