Petition to suspend Russia from G20

We, the people that want the war in Ukraine to stop, call on the leaders of G20 member countries to suspend Russia from G20 until all the Russian troops withdraw from Ukraine's internationally recognized territory. This is a call to stop the war!

The war in Ukraine
On 24 February 2022, Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian troops to invade Ukraine on a so called "special operation". The weapons and the humanitarian help provided to Ukraine by the international community allowed Ukraine to resist the Russian attacks and saved the Ukrainians from being erased as a nation. But what happens in Ukraine now is a still a tragedy, a humanitarian disaster and it must stop. Tens of thousands of people have died, including children. Millions have been turned into refugees. Every day there is a real potential for the war to escalate into something much worse. This is why we must all do our best to achieve peace as soon as possible. Suspending Russia from G20 until the Russian troops are out of Ukraine is a peaceful way to try to end this conflict. Invading another country is not the way we should do things in the 21st century. If this becomes the new norm any country not strong enough to deter invasion is in danger of being invaded by a stronger neighbour.

The diplomatic context
The United Nations is an organization dedicated to maintaining international peace and security. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity and of the Charter of the United Nations. But the United Nations cannot stop this war because Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and, as such, Russia will veto any resolution that could force the Russian troops to withdraw from Ukraine's territory. So, when diplomacy fails, we must all do our part to stop the war and save lives. We must not let war evolve into something we cannot control, an armed conflict that will involve more countries fighting.

The economic context
This war caused a number of states to impose sanctions on Russia. Those sanctions should be understood as a peaceful way to try and stop this conflict. However, their effect will only materialize over time. The sanctions are not aimed at the Russian people. Their goal is to stop the war in Ukraine by making it harder for Russia to continue this war. In the meantime, we face an energy crisis and a food crisis, both due to, or at least amplified by the war in Ukraine. The nature of war is such that it can turn long-term trade partners into adversaries. Its unpredictability makes impossible any long-term economic plans or trade agreements. That is why we have to achieve peace before anything else.

Conclusion
By suspending Russia from G20 we can stop the war from escalating into something endangering our very survival as a civilization. This is one of the few remaining ways to call for peace!
